Norman Stadler Ironman World Championship Kona 2006

Norman Stadler gives a good interview at CompetitorRadio.com. You can check it out here. CompetitorRadio.com has been doing some very good interviews lately and this gives me a chance to analyze them a bit and try to figure out the top athletes.

Norman Stadler, it seams to me at least, is not what many would expect from a two time champion. He is not into marketing and presentation. The impression I got from the interview is that he is very down to earth, oposite from what I heard about him before, and that he is a fighter. He reminds me of the boxers: he is there to do a job and if he will do his best to do it properly. The whole other thing with media and all the other people etc are none of his business, he follow it through a bit, because he has to, but not because he wants to. This is what is expected of some champions I think. Not all of them are able to smooth-talk the media like Mark Allen or Lance Armstrong.

However, I agree that Stadler was not given proper respect. He has won the Ironman World Championship title twice. Once he could have won it as well if he did not have bike problems. Yet still people do not believe in him or underestimate him. He is a good swimmer, abnormally awesome on the bike and an excelent runner (to run a sub 3 hour marathon after 42kmh average on 40 deg C is incredible!).

I am glad I listened to this interview, I appreciate and respect Norman Stadler even more and will chear for him in Kona on 13th October.
