Triathlon One O One

Triathlon One O One is a new triathlon race series starting out in North America. The 101 races follow the idea of the old ITU long distance format: 3k + 130k + 30k (total is a bit more than 101 miles). Lots of promises (big money purse, lots of races within next few years…) are made by the organizers of this series.

Again, like several times before, I can only say it is great that there is more competition amongst the race organizers. It means that more money will be available (interesting only for the PROs) and more important, that the quality of races will be higher. With series like 101, Xterra, Challenge, Ironman and ITU always trying to mingle themselves in the whole story, the only problem is to decide which races to do.

However, all this growth is still very limited. It reminds me of cell phones in late 80s. A huge part of the world is not even aware of this sport not to mention the awareness of choosing between 101 or 70.3 or 140.6. Long distance triathlon still has a long long road ahead and there is still so much space for small decentralized race networks that can slowly grow into international ones. 101 is just one of many that will show up in the next 5-10 years.
